There are 41 days remaining between now and my fourth half marathon. Unlike the previous three where a whole year went by between races, this event is taking place a little over four months after my most recent. Fearing that I have not adequately prepared for this event up until now, I have decided to make a live-strong, dead-set, no excuses regimen to follow for the next five weeks. Although I have been running far more this fall/early winter than I have in the previous years, it has not been the kind of running I had set out to do. Gaps for vacations and illness have affected my stride; and not necessarily just in the technical sense. I have noticed that my good days are not when I predict them to be, and vice versa – which was always easy to do in the summers leading up to, at least, the most recent two half marathons.
My first thought was that I will stay at my current weekly mileage and just hope for a decent time and race-day stance. It’s worked before, right? But I think what is more important here is to realize that there will be other races, specifically, another half in the Northern California beach town of Santa Cruz . So instead of tapering off like last summer, which proved to be über-successful and fun, there will likely only be a small decrease in distance a few days leading up to the race.
Equipped with new running gear thanks to my amazing fiancée and Sports Basement of Walnut Creek, I will be following the below, hopefully to a T, in hopes to look like something other than a sloth come Sunday, Superbowl Sunday, this February:
